Tips for Success and Helpful Links

Students, you will have homework every day whether there is an actual assignment or not.  Learning a foreign language is like learning math.  You have to practice every day.  Notes and vocabulary need to be reviewed every day.  This will only take about 15 to 20 minutes and by Friday, Monday's notes have been reviewed 5 times.  The easiest way to study vocabulary is to make note cards.  Studying this way cuts down on studying time before tests and quizzes and helps you store the information in your long term memory.  From the time I introduce new vocabulary and grammar you are expected to know it for the rest of the time you take Spanish.  Remember that conjuguemos allows you to print out flash cards!

Spanish cannot be learned overnight. You mush practice everyday in order to transfer what you learn in class into your long term memory. I get asked all the time, "Sr., what can I do to get better at Spanish?" This is actually not too complicated, here are a few things that I suggest that you do in order to get better at Spanish.

1. Study your vocab every night. I love to use flashcards. I made flashcards for everything (not just Spanish) and they helped me immensely. Whether you like the traditional ink to paper method or you are more state of the art and use your phone and apps, flash cards are quick and easy and they will help you learn your words and grammar. I personally like to study while watching TV. I would simply do this during the commercials. I never liked watching them anyway. This way, in a standard 30 minute TV show, I would study about 8 minutes on average. If you do this 5 times a week then you have studied just vocabulary for 40 minutes!!!!! As you get better and better at recognizing the English words from the Spanish ones, try doing it the opposite way. This makes things more challenging and makes you better at Spanish. By the end of the week, try writing them down too. Not just saying them. Now you are really ready for that quiz.

Notecard studying schedule for learning vocab:
Days 1 and 2-Look at the Spanish side and say what it means in English
Days 3 and 4-Look at the English side and say the Spanish
Days 5, 6 and 7-Look at the English side and be able to write the Spanish

2. Don't wait til the last minute to do your conjuguemos homework: Much like flashcards, conjuguemos homework will help you to remember the words and to help you spell them and recognize the articles and the accent marks for all of your vocabulary. Even if you have mastered the homework and received 100% on everything, try it again. It can't hurt to study more.
